- The laptop is under 6–7 years old. The processor is still capable of handling everyday tasks — web browsing, email, documents, streaming, light photo editing.
- RAM is at least 8GB. If you have 4GB, upgrading the RAM alongside the SSD will give you a much bigger improvement. Some laptops have soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded — we can tell you during a diagnostic.
- The screen, keyboard, and trackpad all work. If any of these are failing, the repair costs start adding up and a new laptop may make more sense.
- Boot times and file operations are the main pain points. If the laptop takes 2 minutes to boot, apps take 30 seconds to open, and file copies crawl, the hard drive is the bottleneck. An SSD fixes all of these instantly.
- The battery still holds a reasonable charge. If the battery is also failing, you can replace both the drive and the battery for less than the cost of a new laptop.

When to replace the laptop instead

- The laptop is over 7 years old. The processor is likely too slow for modern web pages and applications, even with an SSD. Security updates may also have ended.
- The motherboard or GPU is failing. If you are seeing graphical artifacts, random shutdowns, or the laptop will not POST, the problem is not the hard drive. Motherboard repairs are expensive and often not worth it on older laptops.
- The operating system is no longer supported. If your laptop cannot run a current version of Windows or macOS, an SSD will not fix the security and compatibility issues that come with an outdated OS.
- Multiple components are failing. If the screen is flickering, the keyboard has dead keys, and the battery is swollen, you are looking at multiple repair costs that may exceed the value of the laptop.
- You need significantly more performance. If you have started video editing, 3D modeling, or gaming and your laptop cannot keep up, an SSD will not solve the performance gap. You need a newer processor and dedicated graphics.
